How to pick up the accompaniment

Before anyone who loves to sing and knows how or is learning to play the piano, sooner or later the question arises about how to pick up the accompaniment to your own vocal. The advantages of accompanying yourself are obvious.

For example, there is no need to adapt to the accompanist and his manner of performance; or, for example, it is possible to lower the pace somewhere a little to take a breath, and somewhere to speed it up. By the way, this technique (variation of tempo) is called “rubato” and is used to make the performance expressive and lively. It may seem that it is difficult to select an accompaniment, but these difficulties can be overcome with due diligence and the implementation of a few simple recommendations.

Determine the mood and tonality

The first thing to start with is the definition of fret (major or minor). Without going into details of the theory of music, one can say that the minor sounds sad (or even gloomy), and the major - cheerfully and cheerfully.

Then you should carefully analyze the selected work and take into account its range. It often happens that in the middle or near the end of the song the melody goes up and is taken with difficulty, and there is a probability of “letting the rooster”. In this case, the work should be transposed (that is, transferred to another, more convenient, tonality).

Selection of melody and harmony

At this stage, much will depend on the complexity of the work and your level of ownership of the instrument. Choosing a melody, try to sing every sound (note) - this will allow you to better feel the possible falsehood, and, moreover, is useful for the development of hearing.

It is not necessary to pick up the melody, moving from the beginning of the piece to its end. If there is a fragment in the middle (for example, the chorus of the song) that seems easier to pick up, start with it: having the right part of the piece, the rest is easier to pick up.

Having defined the melodic line, it is necessary to impose harmony on it, to put it simply - to pick up chords. Here you can benefit from not only your own hearing, but also knowledge of the most common chord sequences (for example, the tonic-subdominant-dominant sequence is very common). Each of the musical styles has its own basic sequences, information about which can be easily found on the Internet or the musical encyclopedia by genre.

The texture and rhythm of the accompaniment

Making sure that the melody is in harmony with the chords, you should create an accompaniment of rhythmic pattern. Here you need to focus on the size, rhythm and tempo of the work, as well as on its character. A lyrical arpeggio will suit a lyrical romance, for example, and a staccato bass + chord, a frivolous and simple song.

Finally, we note that, although we talked about how to select the accompaniment using the example of a piano, these tips are general in nature and applicable to other instruments. Whatever your role playing, the accompaniment will not only enrich your repertoire, but also help you develop your hearing and learn to feel and understand music better.
